August always hits with a certain finality—the last gasps of summer break, the creeping return of school routines, the slow fade of Hollywood's blockbuster season. The days are still long, but there's a sense that time is running out on vacations, beach trips, and the promise of carefree movie nights. That makes it the perfect moment to catch what's left of Netflix's summer streaming slate. This month's lineup includes pulse-pounding action flicks, a few spine-tingling horror entries, and even an apocalyptic drama that captures the month's last-gasp energy before the season shifts for good.
There are quite a few reasons a film can be dropped from a streamer like Netflix; perhaps the movie's rights are no longer available, or its popularity doesn't justify the cost of licensing. The motivation may vary, and though many of Netflix's August 2025 cinematic casualties already met their fate on the first of the month, there's still time to catch some of the departing films.
If you're the kind of person who yearns for pumpkin spice in the blazing heat, maybe you have an appetite for scary movies before the spooky season comes into focus. You'll have a couple of options, starting with "Ouija: The Origin of Evil," in which the daughter of a fake medium attempts to communicate with her late father through the popular board game and unleashes a demon instead. The streamer exorcises that title Aug. 16, and then a day later it carves up "Thanksgiving," a '90s slasher throwback from director Eli Roth about a killer that terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts.
You'll have a little longer (Aug. 25, to be exact) to see one of the best movies of the century, at least according to The New York Times. In "Melancholia," director Lars von Trier chronicles the fracturing relationship between two sisters as Earth slowly collides with another planet. Not into the end-of-the-world vibes? Throw some popcorn into a bowl and catch "The Hitman's Bodyguard" (and then its sequel, "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard") by Aug. 31 and catch Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson teaming up and attempting to stay alive through numerous near-death adventures.
