New San Antonio trail blossoms with access to books, fun and sunflowers

The Schaefer Branch Library Trail is short but beautiful as bushes filled with sunflowers surround the 830-foot-long walk right outside the library at 6322 U.S. Highway 87 E, near Rigsby Avenue. The not-so-shady but pet-friendly paved trail is likely a less than 10-minute walk if you don’t stop and smell the roses – sunflowers in this case, which are natural to the area (yes, bees are a thing here). You can also check out the fun StoryWalk by local author Xelena González.

Free lunches for all NEISD students in 2021-2022 school year

All North East Independent School District students can eat lunch free during the coming school year. San Antonio’s second-largest district is one of many school systems that’s opted into a federal expansion of the school lunch program. Now all students can eat meals free, regardless of how much money their parents earn.

Project Cool provides free box fans to San Antonio-area senior citizens

The project works to prevent heat-related illness and deaths during the hot summer months in South Texas.

The project, now in its 25th year, kicked off June 4 at Guadalupe Community Center. It’s going strong with organizations hosting fan drives and volunteers distributing fans to seniors. The coalition supporting Project Cool includes the City of San Antonio Human Services Department, the San Antonio Fire Department, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities. The average fan costs $22, which some seniors may not be able to afford. Donations of five or more 20″ box fans can be dropped off at St. Stephen’s CARE Center at 2127 S. Zarzamora Street between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Monday-Friday. Donations of fewer than five fans can be dropped off at any San Antonio Fire Department station, except Station 23 at the airport. Anyone interested in receiving a free boxed fan should call the United Way 2-1-1 Help Line to find a convenient site for pickup.

San Antonio’s Parade of Lanterns floats back onto River Walk this summer

The beautiful lantern parade along the River Walk is back. For the past three years, the parade has lit up the River Walk with stunning 26-foot-long floats carrying large illuminated lanterns. The best part is that the pageantry is free for the public to enjoy. In the past, the lanterns displayed a selection of shapes and images such as flowers, luminescent trees, and animals. The Ford Parade of Lanterns typically takes place in February to kick off the Chinese New Year. It will take place on the last weekend of August (27 to 29) and again during Labor Day weekend, September 3 to 5. The event will run from 8 to 10 p.m., weather permitting.
