Texas grocery store loses power, lets customers leave without paying

AUSTIN — A busy Texas grocery store that lost power let customers leave the store without paying.

When the power went out at an H-E-B in Austin Tuesday afternoon clerks allowed people in line to leave with the groceries in their carts.

β€œYou just hear (clerks at) registers say, β€˜Go ahead,’” Shelby Lasker told the Austin American-Stateman. β€œI think they could tell how upset people were.”

Hundreds of shoppers were at the store stocking up during a statewide emergency, The Washington Post reported. The state has been hit with torrential winter weather that has swept across much of the south leading to power outages and burst pipes.

β€œAnd it hit us β€” like, wow, they’re just letting us walk out the door,” Tim Hennessy, 60, told The Post.
