Florida man flees crash with backpack full of drugs, hides in fire station, police say

CLEARWATER, Fla. — A Florida man was arrested for drug trafficking after he ran from a crash and hid in a fire station with a backpack full of drugs, authorities said.

Delmetrice Wilson, 24, a passenger in a car crash Thursday, ran from the scene and to a nearby building, not realizing it was a fire station, WFLA reported.

He stashed a backpack filled with drugs between two buildings before running into the fire station to hide, investigators said.

Police responded to the crash, and a witness showed them the stashed backpack, which contained codeine, crack cocaine, alprazolam, MDMA and marijuana. The fire department also notified police, who arrested Wilson on various drug charges.

β€œIf you run from a traffic crash you’ve just been involved in, and you’re carrying a backpack full of drugs, it’s probably not a good idea to hide in the nearby firehouse,” Clearwater police said on social media.

Wilson is being held in jail on a $61,000 bond, according to jail records.
