Christopher A. Douglas, 25, of O’Fallon, Illinois, was charged with three counts of resisting a police officer, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and unlawful possession with the intent to deliver methamphetamine, according to St. Clair County court records.

Johnson also repeatedly hit his head while sitting in a squad car.

“We counted on the video,” Swansea Police Chief Steven Johnson told KSDK. “It was 106 times he bashed his head and during that he tried to wrap his head around a seat belt.”

The traffic stop happened at around 2 a.m. Monday, the television station reported. Officers with the Swansea Police Department said they smelled marijuana, checked the car and moved to arrest a man inside, but said before they could get him in handcuffs he fought all four officers.

Douglas, who was in possession of a gun and meth, was on Illinois Department of Corrections parole for domestic battery and possession of a controlled substance, the Swansea Police Department said in a statement. Douglas had previously been charged with eight felonies.

“It’s pretty dramatic watching several of your officers rolling around on the ground on concrete fighting an individual and there’s no doubt in my mind that they probably sustained more injuries because of that extra effort to deescalate and not hurt him,” Johnson told KSDK.

“While officers tended to their injuries, the suspect began banging his head on the shield in the squad car,” the Swansea Police Department said in a news release. “He banged his head over 100 times and attempted to wrap his head around a seat belt yelling that he wanted to die. Officers tried to calm him and stop him. Because of the violent nature of the subject, they transported him to the county jail, then to a local hospital. He was treated for the head injury he received while banging his head on the shield and transported back to the county jail.

“Officers were also treated for their injuries and finished their shift.”

Johnson said the bruises on Douglas’ face showed the extent of the prisoner’s self-harm.

“I don’t want to shame him, I don’t mean it like that,” Johnson told KSDK. “So many would say law enforcement caused the injuries to his head, and we have video that clearly shows that he hurt three or four of the officers and he was barely injured until he did it to himself.”
