San Antonio — COVID-19 hospitalizations in Texas dip below 5,000 for the first time since June, state reports

458 hospitalized with COVID-19 in Bexar County. The state’s tally of Texans hospitalized due to COVID-19 dropped below 5,000 for the first time since June. A total of 4,907 patients remain in hospitals as of Tuesday — an encouraging trend downward following a surge in July. During that month, the Texas Department of State Health reported hospitalizations had surpassed 10,000.The state reported 181 additional deaths on Tuesday, bringing the total to 11,576. About 466,550 people in Texas have recovered from the virus. In Bexar County hospitals, 458 were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Tuesday. Local officials confirmed 124 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, and 16 more deaths that occurred between July 21 and Aug. 18.

‘Valley Girl’ star Deborah Foreman to host Schertz EVO Entertainment drive-in movie double-feature

EVO Entertaiment is extending its summer drive-in film festival with a double-feature of “Valley Girl” and “April Fool’s Day.” The double-feature begins at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at EVO Schertz, 18658 Interstate 35. H-E-B has new store hours, updated list of purchase limits on products

Starting Monday, most H-E-B stores will operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. until further notice. In addition to the new hours, H-E-B has lifted purchase limits on paper towels, eggs and hand soap and sanitizer. Whataburger has released the perfect gift for canine lovers on National Dog Day. The San Antonio-based icon on Wednesday launched a pet collection that includes a pet set with all the necessities (even for cats too) for $29.99. Poteet Strawberry Fest canceled entirely in 2020 due to coronavirus pandemic Event expected to return in 2021

The festival was initially postponed from its original April 3-5 dates to Oct. 30-Nov. 1 as COVID-19 began to spread in the spring, forcing popular events to be pushed back or canceled.

A new drive-in outdoor movie theater is opening in San Antonio,

A new drive-in outdoor movie theater is opening in San Antonio, bringing iconic flicks like “Selena” and food trucks to a space on the city’s South Side.

Mission Outdoor Theater will open Friday, Sept. 4 at 8069 Challenger Blvd. near Brooks City Base, according to a Tuesday news release from Electric Fiesta, which manages the new theater and is the same company that hosted an EDM Drive-In concert in June in the Freeman Coliseum parking lot.

There will be two screens that can accommodate up to 130 vehicles. Visitors will need to purchase tickets for each movie being screened at the theater. Ticket prices are $27 per vehicle and can be purchased at missiondrivein.com. Attendees are welcomed to bring their own snacks or purchase items from the food trucks on site. Cash will not be allowed.

The lineup for Labor Day weekend includes movies like “Nacho Libre,” “Rocketman,” and “Anchorman.” The movie schedule will be released every two weeks via social media and on its website.

Mission Outdoor Theater states on its website that it is resurrecting the iconic Mission Drive-In by bringing back drive-in flicks to the South Side. However, the company told mySA.com it is not affiliated with the Mission Drive-In, which is now known as The Mission Marquee Plaza.

The Mission Drive-In theater opened in 1948. It closed in 2000, but reopened as The Mission Marquee Plaza to hosts movie events with Slab Cinema, according to the website. The Mission Marquee Plaza, located on 3100 Roosevelt Ave., has not reopened its venue due to the coronaviurs pandemic, according to its Facebook page.

Hallowfest is returning to Six Flags Fiesta Texas without haunted houses or indoor shows this year

Hallowfest at Six Flags Fiesta Texas will be different this year as it navigates safety concerns sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. According to the amusement park’s website, Hallowfest will ensure social distancing by having no indoor mazes, haunted houses or indoor shows. The popular spooky celebration will run on weekends and select days from Sept. 19 to Nov. 1. Six Flags will have some haunted trails and scare zones operating with social distancing enforced, the park said on its website.

State Fair of Texas announces Big Tex Fair drive-thru event

Food lovers rejoice! The show will go on at Big Tex Circle, with a twist. A special Big Tex photo-only Drive-Thru experience will open on Sept. 19 and 20. The Big Tex Fair Food Drive-Thru will operate Fridays through Sundays during the originally anticipated dates of this year’s State Fair of Texas, as well as Monday, October 12: September 25-27, October 2-4, 9-12, 15-18. According to organizers, the drive-thru event will not occur on Saturday, Oct. 10 due to the historic AT&T Red River Showdown between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma in Cotton Bowl Stadium.

John Lennon’s killer denied parole for an 11th time

The man who gunned down John Lennon outside his Manhattan apartment in 1980 was denied parole for an 11th time, state corrections officials said Wednesday. Mark David Chapman was denied after being interviewed by a parole board Aug. 19, according to corrections officials. Chapman, 65, is serving a 20-years-to-life sentence at Wende Correctional Facility, east of Buffalo.
