Cady Lalanne made a statement on Sunday at the TD Garden when he led the UMass Minutemen to a win over Boston College Eagles, and that statement was "look out." Lalanne's 27-point, 12-rebound performance was enough to earn him the first Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award of the season.
Lalanne was a monster on both ends of the court in the Minutemen's 86-73 win over their cross-state rivals, grabbing eight offensive rebounds and earning high praise from BC coach Steve Donahue. He made life easy on UMass, cleaning up miss after miss and bullied BC's bigs inside to every loose ball.
Most of his damage was done in the second half, notching 18 points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes of game time. It was during that stretch that UMass erased a 36-32 deficit en route to its 13-point win. Chaz Williams was instrumental to the run as well, but Lalanne was a constant burden on the Eagles from buzzer to buzzer.
Fordham's Jon Severe and Rhode Island's Ifeanyi Onyekaba shared the conference's Rookie of the Week honors.
