Recently acclaimed, Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, Kenny Barrons prestigious career expands for more than 50 years. One of his first gigs was as a pianist with the Dizzy Gillespie quartet; it was in Gillespies band where Kenny developed an appreciation for Latin and Caribbean rhythms. Barron has been nominated nine times for Grammy Awards and for the American Jazz Hall of Fame. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009. For over 25 years, Barron taught piano and keyboard harmony at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He now teaches at the Juilliard School of Music. Throughout his career, Kenny Barron has been the pianist of choice for some of jazzs greatest musicians. Now at age 61, whether he is playing solo, with his Trio, his Brazilian jazz ensemble, Canta Brasil (a quintet featuring some of Brazils greatest musicians) or his latest quintet (which features Stefon Harris and Anne Drummond), Kenny Barron is recognized the world over as a master of performance and composition. Transcending all categories, Barron is a well-traveled veteran whose scintillating yet sensitive stylings have lifted bandstands with jazz icons ranging from the flame-throwing bopster Dizzy Gillespie to the smoldering melodist Stan Getz. -cjonline.com (The Topeka Capital-Journal) Hard-bop pianist Kenny Barron has been a musicians musician for decades, playing behind such towering figures as Dizzy Gilles pie, Yusef Lateef, Stan Getz, and Freddie Hubbard. -The Salt Lake Tribune USD 30.00
